ETA Anthony Joseph’s comments to an earlier post on SIDEBURNS Magazine regarding a show Anthony did with fellow ETAs Colin Dexter and Aidan Iannandrea earlier this year in Burlington, Ontario, were so poignant that I asked Anthony’s permission to share his well-written tributes and messages to his friends with you all. Thank you, Anthony, for your comments.

The original articles to which Anthony’s comments apply can be accessed by clicking on “Recap of ETAs Anthony, Colin, and Aidan’s Show” and “Focus On: Colin Dexter” (which contains great videos) are highlighted in bold print below. (All photos used in this blog are credited to C. MacArthur).

New comment from Anthony on Recap of ETAs Anthony, Colin, and Aidan's Show:

SAM_3455.JPG

I must comment on this show.  When I do my performances, I try and get the younger generation of ETAs to come out and give them some exposure because, let's face it, without exposure, how are they going to get any better.  This is true for Aidan, who is a newcomer in the business, having only been singing Elvis for about 2 years.  My first encounter with this young man was in May of 2017.  He only performed a couple tunes but I could see his love for Elvis.  I have since invited him to perform at a number of my shows and every time he walks out on stage he improves.  His passion and ambition for his tribute is to be admired by all of us tribute artists. We could all take lessons from this young man simply by how much and how hard he works at his craft to be sure that every performance he gives is better than the last. Along with his very supportive family and his father David, a tribute artist himself, I am confident that we will see this young man make his way up the ladder.  Recently, competing against 15 other artists in Westfield, NY, he placed 9th overall. When viewing his performances sent to me by his father, I was grinning ear to ear. He worked hard, performed songs that you don't hear often, and set himself apart from the norm.  I am proud to call Aidan a friend and I wish him the very best in his career as a tribute artist, be it Elvis or any artist he branches out to.  Keep up the hard work and I know you will succeed greatly.

Your friend, Anthony

New comment from Anthony on Focus On: ETA Colin Dexter:

SAM_3405.JPG

I have had the pleasure of working with Colin on several occasions and one thing I have to say, in addition to him being a kind and humble ETA (which I believe most ETAs lack), his voice is one of those voices that captivates you.  Although he may have only been 16 when we started working together, his vocal range stretched far beyond.  He has an operatic tone to his voice that, if you weren't staring right at him, you would think he is a much older man.  He is an amazing tribute artist whose potential is sky high. I can still remember his first contest in 2014 where this shy young man walked on stage and then this booming voice came out singing a pitch perfect rendition of "SURRENDER" which, for any ETA, me included, is a very challenging song.  Colin ended up beating me in the contest, and it was well deserved.  I have nothing but good things to say about Colin. For anyone who has not seen him perform, I highly recommend you get to a performance as you WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.  Colin's love for Elvis shines through in every performance, and I am extremely proud to call him one of my best friends.  To him directly I will say this...Don't get discouraged if you don't win or place in a contest.  The opinion of 5 or 6 people doesn't matter.  Your FANS, FRIENDS and FAMILY are the ones who will see you through and with much practice and hard work, your time WILL COME..I am sure of it!!

Sincerely,
Your friend, Anthony

Recap

Rockway Vineyards in St. Catharines was an excellent choice of venue for Friday night’s “One Night Only” dinner and show offered by Sandra Gold, owner and president of Stars on Stage Inc.  Known for booking “North America’s Top Tribute Acts”, Sandra’s line-up of stellar entertainers ensured that our savory four-course meal was followed by a trine of crowd-pleasing professional performances.

Not too far from the US border, and an easy drive for most Ontario residents, it was expected that there would be a lot of familiar faces seated at the tables in the Rockway dining room.

Most everyone who purchases tickets for tribute shows know a little about tribute artists —except for the two very friendly, and very funny, gentleman visiting from Newfoundland who shared their table with Hamilton ETA fan, Cathy Wood. It was their very first tribute show. I asked Cathy after the show if she thought they had a good time, and it appears that they did. I am very sure that Cathy had a good time, too, as she received not only a teddy bear from ETA Sylvain Leduc during his first set when he sang “Teddy Bear”, but also an autographed red scarf during his second set. Friend, and ETA fan, Dot Farr, also received a teddy bear and scarf from Sylvain, making it a very special night for both ETA fans.

Will Chalmers

Rockway Show 21.jpg

It was my first time enjoying a performance by Will Chalmers. Will, who was once an Elvis tribute artist, began paying tribute to Neil Diamond in 2002 and since that time has exclusively portrayed the Boston born Neil Diamond. During his career as a tribute artist, Will has travelled from the east to west coasts of Canada, and in the United States, and has played many venues in Ontario, including theatres, casinos, convention centres, arenas, corporate events, resorts, and at many outdoor festivals. With his years of experience, and from what I had heard of Will from his fans, I was looking forward to a great performance.

Dressed in a blue sparkly shirt, Will took the stage looking every bit like Neil Diamond. His vocals were so accurate that I got lost in his performance, imagining that I was at the legend’s own show. Will’s performance had everything that a Neil Diamond fan could wish: He sang all Neil’s best loved songs and had the look, sound, and stage presence of the one and only Neil Diamond. And to the delight of the audience, and with a nod to American visitors at the show, Will changed the words in “Coming to America” to “Coming to Canada”. The evening’s entertainment was off to a great start.

Sylvain Leduc

Next to perform was ETA Sylvain Leduc from Valleyfield, Quebec. Sylvain has been making many appearances at festivals and competitions in Ontario, Quebec, and the USA since I first saw him at Flamboro Downs last year. The award-winning ETA’s fan base continues to grow exponentially. From the moment his music started playing on Friday night, and even before he made his way to the stage, fans showed their excitement for Sylvain’s tribute to Elvis.

Rockway Show 19.jpg

Looking splendid in his fringed jumpsuit, Sylvain responded to the very enthusiastic audience by giving a fantastic performance. From his many shows this past year in southern Ontario, Sylvain has a following of fans that include Sandy, Sandra, and their friends. This group of ladies add so much fun to any show they attend, and Friday night was no exception.

Rockway Show 16.jpg

In a very special moment, Sylvain was joined on stage by another dedicated ETA fan. Tammy showed her best Elvis moves as Sylvain serenaded her. In Sylvain’s second set, Tammy was invited on stage again, and this time was presented with a scarf. Tammy also provided some humorous moments from her seat in the audience. “I love you,” she shouted to a smiling Sylvain; and when he commented on how hot it was under the stage lights, Tammy said, “Why don’t you take off your jacket?” An amused Sylvain removed his belt to show Tammy that it was not possible as his whole jumpsuit was one long “jacket”.

Sylvain, a very busy ETA, has recorded three CDs, will be a judge at the Flaming Star Festival next weekend, and has a November show with the UK’s ETA, Eddy Popescu!

Dave LaFlame

Rockway Show 7.jpg

As with Will Chalmers, this was my first time seeing Dave LaFlame perform his tribute to Tom Jones. Dave bears an uncanny resemblance to Sir Tom, and more importantly Dave has the voice and moves of the music icon down to an art . I have been a fan of Tom Jones since the early days of his career, and to see someone perform such a great tribute to Tom was indeed a treat. Funny, and very comfortable on stage, Dave told an amusing story about Paul Anka’s meeting with Engelbert Humperdinck, where he pitched his new song. Engelbert declined Paul’s offer of the song, and “She’s a Lady” went on to be Tom Jones’s highest ranking hit in the US charts!

Rockway Show 5.jpg

In a very amusing moment, Dave did some hilarious ‘showgirl moves’ across the stage as his own backup dancer. He also engaged the audience in the singing the ‘whoa-a whoa’ parts of “What’s New Pussycat”, and had us all swaying back and forth to “Delilah”. Dave, the ultimate performer, gave an ultimate performance.

Finale

From beginning to end, “One Night Only” was a fabulous night of food, fun, and entertainment. To cap the evening off, Will, Sylvain, and Dave came back to the stage to sing “Viva Las Vegas”. And the three entertainers posed for photos and signed autographs in the lobby.

If you missed this spectacular Rockway show, Sandra Gold has two more shows coming in the Spring that you won’t want to miss. On May 31st, 2019, Ultimate title winner, ETA Gordon Hendricks, will be joined by Kara Chandler as Cher and Marcus Wells as Sir Elton John for a dinner show at the Casablanca Winery Inn, Grimsby, ON. And on June 1st, 2019, Gordon Hendricks will be performing with the Casino Brothers band at the ScotiaCentre in Niagara Falls. Posters for the two shows are posted on Facebook, or call 905-309-7171 for the Casablanca Winery Dinner/Show on May 31st, 2019, and 905-357-7008 or 1-888-655-9090 for the ScotiaCentre show on June 1st, 2019.

Award winning ETA Brent Freeman sent some wonderful photos and clippings for this article that take us on a walk down memory lane and highlight special moments in Brent’s career as a singer, musician, and entertainer. We originally talked about doing a “guess the ETA” such as we did for Tim E Hendry; but, except for a change in hair colour and a trim, Brent pretty well looks like he did in his early twenties. Guessing would have been far to easy. On behalf of SB readers, thank you, Brent, for sharing your treasured memories with us and providing comments for each photo. And a special thank you for the “heard it here first” SB announcement:

On January 26th, 2019, Brent Freeman and the Tiger Sharks will be appearing, along with Little Joe and the Werewolves, in a rare gig at the Cadillac Lounge in Toronto. Save the date…more information will be posted soon.

The Tiger Sharks

After researching the Tiger Sharks band, I had some questions for Brent.

Q. Did the Tiger Sharks put out more than one CD?

A. We put out two: “Walk With Me” and “This Is Not a Boating Accident”, which was a Richard Dreyfuss line from the movie “Jaws”. “Walk With Me” was recorded primarily at Sun in Memphis. Obviously it was a huge thrill for us.

TIGER SHARKS CARD.jpg

Q. Can you tell us more about the experience of recording at Sun Records in Memphis?

A. One of the biggest thrills was just hanging out. When you rent the studio you can do what you please. Our engineer, James Lott, was there when they recorded the soundtrack for "Balls of Fire” with Dennis Quaid. Dennis and Jerry Lee had strippers over while recording…we never did…lol. We had some original Sun guys drop in while we were recording—Malcolm Yelvington and Rufus Thomas. They loved what we were doing and were very nice to us.

Recording with the actual “Great Balls of Fire/Whole Lotta Shakin'“ piano was so cool. It is now in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, but it was still at Sun when we recorded. It has an identifiable sound that you can hear in our recordings and on Jerry Lee's.

Our best memory was when we came back to Sun after our first clump of recording to finish up tracks. James (our engineer) came to me shortly after we arrived and said, "Boy, is Gary (Gary Hardy...the owner of Sun at the time) ever glad you guys came back. He wants to sign you guys." Back then they had a small record company that went under the name "Sun Records" (Sam Phillips still owned the original label name). They had Jerry Lee's one daughter, Phoebe, as part of their roster. We were over the moon! However, in the end, the contract they wanted us to sign wanted rights in perpetuity and we were advised by our music lawyer (same one that Alana Myles was with) not to sign it. We didn't.

TIGER SHARKS CD.jpg

Q. Did the Tiger Sharks later regret that they didn’t sign with Sun?

A. Only from the stand point of being able to say we were with Sun Records…lol. For us, that was soooo unthinkable, but it may not have resulted in any big career. But it would've been great on a resume…lol.

Q. Had you been performing as Jerry Lee Lewis before you had the awesome experience of playing on and recording with the exact same piano as Jerry Lee?

A. We had done a lot of Jerry Lee at gigs. We'd start a set with some piano based songs (Jerry Lee, Fats Domino', Little Richard) then I would switch back to guitar mid set. The only difference between what I was doing then and NOW is a wig and talking with a Louisiana accent. Lol.

Q. What is the origin of the Tiger Sharks band we see today?

A. Rawhide 99 was Dave Fearnley’s band, named after Elvis’s boat in Clambake). I played with Rawhide just a few times when Dave needed me. But working with him in that band was how Dave got into the Tiger Sharks. We were originally a 3 piece (like the Stray Cats). Derek Winkler (bass) and I started the band and have been friends since high school. And Bill Bruder was on percussion.

The other guitar player with Little Joe is Gord Lewis, the original and still guitar player for Teenage Head. It was a big thrill for me to play with Gordie. He's Canadian rock and roll royalty. I loved Teenage Head. Frankie (the lead singer) used to come and see us at the Black Bull on Queen in Toronto and it was a HUGE thrill for us. They/he was one of our idols. We opened for them a number of times. (Video below of Little Joe and the Werewolves is from 2011. Brent, on the far right, provides vocals. C.M.)
