Introduction

I wish to thank Benjamin Dalske’s mom, Cheryl, for sending along Benjamin’s bio to be posted on SIDEBURNS Magazine. It was such a pleasure meeting Benjamin at the street party and seeing him compete in the 25th Anniversary of the Collingwood Elvis Festival. We wish Benjamin continued success with his ETA pursuits and thank him for keeping the memory of Elvis alive for the next generation. C.M.

Bio

Benjamin Dalske is a thirteen year old international award winning Elvis Tribute artist. His love for Elvis Presley began at the age of four when he heard “Suspicious Minds”. From that moment he began watching and listening to everything he could with Elvis in it. Within days of his discovery of the greatest entertainer that ever lived, he began dressing like him and singing along with Elvis via the computer.  The fire was lit! Benjamin’s passion had taken over every spare moment he had. Not only did he continue watching everything he could about Elvis, he spent countless hours researching all the names and years of Elvis’s jumpsuits, as well as where and when he wore them and what he sang while wearing them. You could also find him drawing pictures of Elvis and making his own jumpsuits out of paper, and anything he could find, and re-enacting scenes from his movies. Benjamin spent two years performing “concerts” in his living room for his family; but he was itching to get out on a real stage to sing in front of a bigger audience. His dream came true in April of 2013 when, at six years old, he was invited to make his first public appearance ever at the Philadelphia Elvis Festival. Little did he or any of his family know what was in store for him. Since then he has traveled throughout the US and Canada performing his tribute to honor and remember the King of Rock and Roll at benefits, festivals, private shows and more. He has been on TV and the radio. He has met so many amazing people who share the same love for Elvis that he does. Ben has had many opportunities to sing with his big brother ETAs, and he is very grateful for the time they have spent with him and all they have done to help and encourage him.

Because of what Benjamin does, his mother, Cheryl, who is also a huge Elvis fan was able to for the first time in her life visit Graceland. It was an incredible experience that they shared together, and one that neither will ever forget. Benjamin loves performing and making people smile. He is especially touched when someone tells him his performance made them cry happy tears. He is very proud to be the 2015 and 2016 Collingwood Elvis Festival Jr Youth Grand Champion, the 2019 Collingwood Silver Anniversary Youth Grand Champion, the 2015 Flaming Star Festival youth champion and the 2013, 2017, and 2018 Lake George youth champion. He is a very shy young man, but when he steps onstage you can see he is immediately at home. He loves and performs all eras, but has a deep connection with Elvis's later 70s music.

Benjamin plays the trumpet in his school’s band and also acts in the school plays every year. He plays soccer and basketball and is a big NBA fan as well as WWE. He attends religious education classes weekly and is very faithful. He is an honors student and strives very hard to always do his best in his classes. Benjamin is a very family oriented young man and loves spending time with his parents, little brother Ryan and his fur brother. He loves animals.  He’s a very busy young man, but there is always time for Elvis.

Benjamin Dalske Wins Youth Division Title

In a very exciting Youth Division competition at the 2019 Collingwood Elvis Festival that featured three very talented young competitors, Benjamin Dalske, from Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, was crowned the winner.

Congratulations on your First Place win, Benjamin! Congratulations, also, to Second Place winner, Agostino Trombello and Third Place winner, Spencer Young. All three of you wowed the audience and judges with your great performances.

Wishing each of you much happiness and continued success following your ETA dreams.

An Evening with Elvis

Introduction

Playhouse Cinema sign.jpg

“Elvis: That’s the Way It Is” is described on msn.com as “the definitive portrait of Elvis the Vegas headliner “. The legendary documentary that was filmed in the summer of 1970 begins by showing Elvis rehearsing with his newly formed TCB band. Relaxed and joking during filming, when it comes to staging the music, it is all business with Elvis who knew exactly what he wanted from his band and backup singers. At his best, both vocally and physically, Elvis commanded the rehearsal room like a king holding court. On the day of his first performance in his new Vegas show, the camera follows Elvis and his entourage as they somberly walk the long hall to the Vega stage in anticipation of an engagement that would be Elvis’s triumphant return to live performance. The film, that covers songs from different shows over the summer engagement, shows why Elvis was, is, and always will be the King of Rock ‘n’ Rock. He was electrifying on stage!

It Was a Night—Oh What a Night

With a dazzling full moon, it really was such a night! Elvis and ETA fans, alike, gathered last night at the Playhouse Cinema in Hamilton to watch a big screen showing of the remastered film “Elvis: That’s the Way It Is”. It was great seeing many familiar faces we know from previous ETA shows. Ingrid Gockert, winner of two tickets generously donated by the Tutt family for SB Mag’s contest, brought her daughter along to enjoy the show that provided the perfect mother/daughter outing. Debbie Curran brought along her daughter (seen sharing a laugh in the third photo, first row, below); and my daughter, Lisa, and I were at the Playhouse Cinema to enjoy the movie portion of our ‘dinner and a movie’ night out. Pre-show, we had a lovely dinner at the Bean Bar in Hamilton’s Westdale area. The Bean Bar, which has been in business for twenty-five years, has an extensive menu that offers a variety of great food. I highly recommend it.

It was my first time at the Playhouse Cinema, but I knew from the photo of the interior posted on Playhouse’s website, that I was going to like the theatre. Jacob Tutt, second generation of the Tutt family that also owns the Princess Cinema and Cafe in Kitchener, was very pleasant during our phone conversation; and with a warm and welcoming staff—specifically Jeff and Liana (in first photo below), a licensed concession that sells wine along side popcorn, tea and coffee, and comfy seats with lots of leg room. the tastefully decorated Playhouse Cinema is a fabulous theatre. Reminiscent of an artsy movie house on King William Street that I frequented in the late ‘80s and ‘90s, Playhouse Cinema offers unique movies as well as recent releases. Remembering Elvis

ELVIS: THAT'S THE WAY IT IS

"The definitive portrait of Elvis the Vegas headliner follows the King through his 1970 summer engagement in Las Vegas from backstage bustle to box-office hustle to 27 stage numbers." - msn.com

Elvis Presley died 42 years ago, on Aug 16, 1977 at the age of 42. We remember him on this date with a theatrical presentation of one of his best concert films. This was his first non-dramatic film, made shortly after his return to live performances, and here he is at his best, both vocally and physically. Share the songs and the memories on the big screen!

It's summer 1970. This legendary 1970 documentary follows “The King” Elvis Presley and his newly formed TCB Band through rehearsals, relaxation and the induction of a brand new Vegas show while examining the fan culture surrounding the shows. Having spent prior years making films, this engagement would be Elvis’s triumphant return to live performance. And triumphant it is.

ABOUT PLAYHOUSE CINEMA

Playhouse Cinema.jpg

The Playhouse Cinema is the latest project from Princess Cinemas, one of Canada's longest-running independent art house cinemas. The Princess had humble beginnings: in 1985, freshly graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University's Business program and with a love of film, John Tutt knew the corporate world was not for him. With a bank loan of $5000, he and Chris Polci, a Laurier Film Studies grad, embarked on bringing a repertory cinema to Kitchener-Waterloo. The rest, as they say, is history. They bought two 16mm film projectors and on Sept 18, 1985, they opened the (Original) Princess Cinema on Princess St. with a screening of the Hollywood classic, Casablanca. After a year, Chris decided to return to school, and John carried on, working tirelessly to bring great movies to Waterloo Region cinephiles. To this day, John Tutt's commitment to programming the best films from around the world is admired across the country. Without any public funding, grants or tax dollars, the Princess has benefited solely from the region's movie lovers, who support the Princess's quality programming one movie ticket at a time.

Expansion
In 2005, John and his wife, Wendy, opened the Princess Twin cinemas in Waterloo. The Twin, located on King St. (literally around the corner from the "Original") enabled the Princess to expand its movie offerings. While the Original maintained its calendar format of curated films, the Princess Twin could offer premiere art house films with open-ended runs. Successful films from the Original could be moved over to the Twin and second-run films also could be programmed at the Twin on a week to week basis. The following year, they opened the Princess Cafe, offering light meals and the popular "Dinner and a Movie" deal for hungry movie-goers.

The Next Generation
In 2018, John, Wendy and their son, Jacob (freshly graduated from Laurier's Business program and with a love of film!) purchased the Playhouse Cinema on Sherman Avenue. For years, their friend, Hamilton filmmaker Terrance Odette, ha encouraged them to bring their cinema model to Hamilton, but the timing and opportunities had not been right. All of that changed when CityKidz put the Playhouse up for sale in the fall of 2017. Awed by the beauty of this 105 year-old theatre, the Tutt family recognized this unique opportunity to not only restore a rare, historic cinema, but also to participate in the revitalization of the creative Barton neighbourhood. Having opened March 1, 2019, the Playhouse aims to be a cultural hub, a true independent art house cinema, offering great films and programming for Hamilton's downtown and beyond.

Editor’s Note: All information contained in this article is credited to the Tutt family. With the exception of the opening photo, the promo video and photo of the Playhouse Cinema are from Playhouse Cinema’s website.

I have been to the Princess Cinema in Kitchener on many occasions, and each time has been a wonderful experience. I am looking forward to seeing many shows at the Playhouse Cinema—a great addition to the Hamilton scene. Welcome to the neighbourhood!

Best regards, Carolyn MacArthur, Editor, SIDEBURNS Magazine.
