Focus On: ETA Jake Slater and Laura West

October 2, 2019 Carolyn MacArthur

Beautiful photo of ETA Jake Slater by photographer Katie Fairchild (Eklund).

August 10th, 2020. Editor’s Note: Life moves on and situations are ever changing. I received a message today that the personal status of Jake Slater and Laura West has changed since the publishing of this article. While I will not include a link to this article in future posts, it will remain as part of SIDEBURNS Magazine publication history. Best regards, Carolyn MacArthur.

Update On: ETA Jake Slater

I received this beautifully written update on what ETA Jake Slater has been focusing on recently. In the comments I received from Jake’s fans, they speak of his fine qualities as a person, as well as great talent as an artist. It is clear from what Jake has written, they know him very well. It is my pleasure to post this update. Everyone at SIDEBURNS Magazine wishes you much happiness in life and in his career, Jake—now and always. C. M.

"I took a step back doing competition to focus more on my own form of entertaining instead of competing. I want to perform more around home, doing shows for smaller venues that have been loyal to me through the years. Ever since my father passed away in October 2020, I've grown more passionate about creating friendships and experiences with people who can't always travel or afford to travel long distance to see Elvis entertainment that are at bigger venues and festivals. I'm a very family oriented person, and to me, performing at nursing homes and for the veterans is where my true passion lies. The conversations and stories I get to hear from people who have seen Elvis live, to never getting to see him at all, are special to me. I have been very busy performing all around Michigan this year, and creating new relationships and bonds with people.. Maybe some day I will do another competition, but my main priority now is to provide wholesome entertainment for those around me. Since the Elvis movie came out, there’s been a big interest from the younger generations which is something I love to see! Life has been great in my personal life and career, and I've never been happier! "

Quote from ETA Jake Slater:

“I chose to be an Elvis Tribute Artist out of shear admiration for the man, Elvis himself. That was the drive. He was such an amazing and magnetic performer. He was also such a great human being and great humanitarian. Elvis has always been someone I feel you can really look up to. I want to do the best and most respectful tribute I can to the man that brought so much to the world!”

Questions and Answers

Q.  What qualities first attracted you to each other?

A.  We both agree that there was a deep attraction from the beginning, of course physically, but also emotionally as well. Along with being each other’s significant other, we are also best friends and soul mates.  We have always felt what’s meant to be, is what’s meant to be!

Q.  Would you like to share how the proposal took place?

A. The proposal took place at Graceland and it was such a peaceful and beautiful day that day!

Q.  What’s your favorite Elvis’ song?

A.  Laura: Oh wow, almost too many to name…I would say “Baby Let’s Play House” and “That’s Alright Mama”.

A. Jake: I would have to say “Baby Let’s Play House”.  Really though it’s hard to pick just one!

Q.  Answering for each other—what quality does your partner bring to the stage that you most admire?

A.  Laura: Jake brings such a natural charisma, and is very authentic. He has such a great connection with the audience and is very knowledgeable about Elvis and often shares neat trivia information and stories with the fans during his performances which they really enjoy.

A. Jake:  Laura also brings such an authentic representation of her tributes and is very creative with coming up with outfits and ideas. I feel people also love the charisma and connection we have in real life and that always comes through on stage as well when we perform duets together.

Q.  Have you always been an Elvis fan?  What are your earliest memories of seeing the King of Rock and Roll?

A. Laura: My first memory is a cassette tape my dad gave me of Elvis, and I was instantly hooked!

A. Jake:  I first heard Elvis on the radio at my grandparents’ house and it was playing “You’re So Square, Baby I Don’t Care”, which has still remained one of my favorite songs to this day.

Q.  If either of you were not in show business, what careers would you each wish to have?

A.  We would love to own a store together, maybe a boutique that also has antiques and a record and music selection. Or maybe even a retro style diner or bed and breakfast!  We are always dreaming of neat ideas together.

Q.  How do you both relax on non-performance days?

A.  We love to relax and watch movies or be outside relaxing and cooking out! We also love going to concerts, antique stores, and festivals!

The “Hawaiian Elvis”

Rich Purnell _ Hawaiian Elvis 7.jpg

When ETA Rich Purnell, who is known the world over as “Hawaiian Elvis”, was a little boy, he admired superheroes such as Bat Man and Superman.  During a father and son conversation, his dad pointed out that his heroes were not real.  When Rich was watching an Elvis movie, he asked his dad if this guy was real, and when his dad said “yes”, Rich exclaimed, “Whoa!  That is what I want to do!  I want to be the guy who sings, and talks to all the ladies, and everybody thinks is a really cool guy.”

Rich related mostly to Elvis in the concert years because Elvis’s hair was a little wild “just like his”, and Elvis’s music in the 1970s was closer to what Rich listened to in his youth.

The highlight of Rich Purnell’s career was being asked by Elvis’s nurse, Marion Cox, to sing at a show at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis.  Rich had no dreams to win an Elvis competition, but he wanted to sing for people who knew and loved Elvis, and to hear them say, “You are good!  You sound just like Elvis.”

As an ETA, Rich wants to be appreciated by all people who love his performance, but admits that there is some back lash about looking different than Elvis.  He believes that when an ETA performs at the highest level, it transcends race and ethnicity.  As seen in the video of Rich singing Elvis’s “Ku-U-I-P0”, Rich Purnell pays great tribute to Elvis with his beautiful performance.

Rich, who lives in Orlando, Florida, with his wife, Michele, toured the Philippines and Asia in 2018.  SB Mag fans and I hope that Rich will perform his tribute to Elvis in Ontario sometime soon.

Editor’s Note:  Information for this article was obtained from a YouTube video interview.  Photos, from Rich Purnell’s Facebook page are credited to Michele Purnell (Bohol Tarsier Conservation Area, Philippines and Changdeokgung Palace, South Korea), Arlene Sabian Aguon (photos with American flag, whitle jumpsuit), and Rosario Laruan (Weston Hotel photo). UK ETA Tommy Holland.

UK ETA Tommy Holland.

Introduction

In response to a recent post about ETA Garry Wesley’s show in Brantford, UK resident, Andy Holland, wrote the following comments: We met Garry in Memphis at Elvis week 2019, a really nice guy. He gave my son Tommy Holland, who is an ETA, some great words of advice and encouragement.

When I saw the words, “who is an ETA”, I went to YouTube to check for videos of Tommy. After watching the following videos, I wanted to know more about the talented young ETA, so I asked if Tommy would send his ETA bio to post on SB Mag.

Videos

I wish to thank Andy Holland for sending Tommy’s bio and photos to be posted on SIDEBURNS Magazine. We wish Tommy continued success in his ETA career, and a very happy birthday to his dad, Andy, who is celebrating his birthday today. For more information about Tommy Holland go to https://www.tommyhollandaselvis.com. (Photos credited to Kimberley O’Brien. Edited by Carolyn MacArthur).

Bio

Since breaking onto the Elvis Tribute scene in 2015 at just 19 years old, Tommy Holland quickly established himself in and around his home town of Bolton.

In 2016, he entered his first ever contest, 'King Of Britain', winning the gospel section and gaining the overall runners up spot, only to return 12 months later and win the coveted title of King of Britain 2017.

2017 became a defining year with Tommy making his debut as the resident Elvis in the long running Trevor Chances Legends Show in Blackpool.

Later that year, Tommy worked with Shawn Klush and Dean Z after securing a spot on Shawn Klush's UK Elvis World Tour, returning again on the same show in 2018 at the Manchester Arena!

In 2018 he started to produce his own shows, selling out venues of over 200, as well as performing in countries such as Holland.

In 2019, Tommy was one of the headline acts for Harbor Lights 'Images of The King' qualifying competition and Festival. He went on to secure 5th place in the Memphis 'Images Of The King' world championships. While in Memphis, Tommy also performed at the Graceland complex.

Tommy continues to travel the country bringing his dynamic tribute to Elvis, not just to the usual audiences, but also playing to crowds of up to 3000 at music rock festivals.

With impeccable attention to detail, ETA Tommy Holland faithfully recreates the sound, the look, the feel of the concert movies, 'That's The Way It Is' and 'Elvis on Tour', as well the iconic “'68 Comeback Special” and the movie years genre.

Keith Lewis:  The Bay State Elvis

 Edited by C. MacArthur

Bio

While he cannot say music and singing have been his whole life, Keith Lewis, an award-winning photographer and journalist, appreciates how his life kept leading him back there, until, in the past few years, he found himself competing and performing as Elvis Presley and Dean Martin.  The long trail includes stumbling blocks, such as losing and regaining his singing voice due to illness, and other events that make him even more thankful for opportunities to entertain and elicit smiles.

Along the way, Keith Lewis has performed in musical avenues as diversified as cover bands, musical theater, barbershop quartets, and select madrigal choirs, running the gamut of musical styles from country to show tunes to classical pieces.  However, he says he enjoys his current form of entertainment the most, as it allows him to let loose with his sometimes off-the-wall sense of humor, bringing a unique aspect to Elvis Presley that began with his interpretation of Dean Martin.

"I started listening to Dean Martin when I was a kid, as my mom was into what they called the 'Rat Pack'.  Their music, along with show tunes, were the songs played around the house--until my sister and I found rock and roll," says Lewis. "I loved how Dino would interject one-liners into his act, especially since everyone in our family also had a sense of humor.  I naturally would try to learn the jokes as well as the songs, and deliver them the way he would.  When I started doing Elvis, my other favorite singer, I thought, “Why not tell some one-liners southern style as well?”

"I was basically shy growing up, which is why I started imitating my favorite movie stars and singers.  I discovered that starting with a joke or two would not only ease my anxiety, but would also help win over an audience.  Of course Elvis didn't have a slew of one-liners to pull up, so I started making up my own as I went along."

Known as Bay State Elvis because of his Massachusetts roots, Keith Lewis was the first American to get a Spirit of Elvis Award from two different Canadian festivals.  He received the honor of first place in 2013 at the Tweed Elvis Festival, and at the 2014 Barrie Rock and Roll Festival, both in Ontario, Canada.  Lewis has also placed fourth in the Tweed Elvis Festival contest, fifth in the Barrie contest, and third in the 2015 "A Night with Elvis" contest in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.  He was also a finalist in the 2014, 2015 and 2016 invitation-only Collingwood Elvis Festival inspirational contests.

Recent highlights include, headlining fundraisers for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metrowest Boston, the historic Arlington Street Church of Boston, the Christian Angel Smile Foundation of Boston and the Spina Bifida Association of New England.  Keith Lewis is also the only Elvis Tribute Artist to perform at Putnam Place at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots (the November 7, 1917 Best Years of Your Life Expo, to rave reviews) and Brockton's Campanelli Stadium (home of the Brockton Rox baseball club).  He recently performed at, among other major venues, a national convention at Boston's Hynes Convention Center in 2016, the historic Proctor Theater in Schenectady, NY in 2014, the Lions Lincoln Theater in Massillon, Ohio on January 8, 2017, following the premiere of "Elvis: The Legend Continues," and the Riverside Theater, Hyde Park, MA in 2015.  Wherever he sings and whatever he does, he says his ultimate goal is to try to bring some happiness into peoples’ lives, and if they laugh, all the better.

In addition to his ETA awards,Keith Lewis has also won awards for his writing.  “I am the only person to ever get a writing, photography and editing award from the New England Press Association.  In the 1980s I got one for writing.  In 2002 or 2003 I got third place in a photography feature, and the following year, my one-man sports section was named the top one in New England for small weeklies.  I also received journalism awards in college, and a couple of internal company awards.”

Introduction

Sir Tom Jon es with Carlo Martini.

Sir Tom Jon es with Carlo Martini.

I often receive messages from fans or managers asking me to feature their favourite ETA on SIDEBURNS Magazine. It very satisfying to honour these requests whenever possible. Every ETA, whether they are an Ultimate, a headliner, a promising young ETA, or a seasoned performer, has an interesting story to tell. Some, like Carlo Martini, have many.

Carlo Franco Martini, one of an estimated 85,000 ETAs worldwide, was unknown to me until I received an email from his manager and girlfriend, Debra Poirier. I was awestruck by the photo that Debra sent of Elvis Presley taken at West Palm Beach, Florida in 1977, and by the many names she dropped that connected Carlo to Elvis’s world of friends and family. I received several photos from Debra of Carlo with well-known show biz people to accompany the stories. I wish to thank Debra Poirier for introducing to SB Mag readers, and me, to singer, actor, author, and ETA, Carlo Franco Martini. (All photos used in this article are credited to Carlo Martini, via Debra Poirier). C.M.

Carlo Franco Martini is a very talented person. Not only is Carlo a singer, he is also an actor.  He started his career as an ETA in New Jersey when he was about twenty years old.  He still does tributes to Elvis, but no longer in the jumpsuits.  As an actor, Carlo has participated in several movies, mostly Westerns, in the USA, and in Italy, working with Italian film director, Mariano Laurenti. His movie credits include: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, filmed in Coast Azur France, Billy the Kid, Showdown in Lincoln County, and The Last American Gunslinger.

Sam Thompson, Elvis’s body guard, with Carlo Martini.

During his youth, Carlo met Elvis Presley in Germany. And on February 13th, 1977, Carlo gave Elvis a plaque of friendship when he was in West Palm Beach, Florida.  Sam Thompson, one of Elvis’s bodyguards with whom Carlo spoke when he called the Sheridan Hotel where Elvis was staying, told Carlo that Elvis liked the gift.  Elvis was eating dinner before he went back on stage, so Sam relayed Elvis’s message to Carlo thanking him for the gift.  Sam also told Carlo that the plaque was packed in Elvis’s luggage and travelled with him to many concerts. Carlo can be seen by the door in the background of the b&w photo that was taken at the West Palm Beach Sheraton Hotel on February 13th, 1977, as Elvis was heading to the seating area to sign autographs.  The plaque that Carlo gave to Elvis is in the trophy room in Graceland, alongside all the other gifts that Elvis received.

In his lifetime, Carlo met Elvis’s first cousin, Harold Loyd*, Elvis’s uncle, Uncle Vester, Elvis’s aunt, Lorraine Smith, Gene Mason, who was part of Elvis’s high school football team. Gene, who was also a great friend of Elvis, had in his possession many items from Elvis, including a guitar. Through Gene Mason, Carlo was introduced to Buddy Montesi*, who was the owner of the ranch that Elvis bought.  Carlo says he felt that he had known them all for a long time, just like friends, and they adopted him as a kind of a nephew; and because Carlo did not have an aunt of his own, Elvis’s aunt told Carlo, “You can call me Aunt Lorraine.”

Carlo had the opportunity of performing in front of some Elvis’s family, and in 1978 , he was almost hired to work on Elvis’s ranch.  Around the same time, Carlo performed in the evenings at some local venues in the Memphis area, and later on in other US cities.

The real Ann-Margret with ETA Carlo Martini.

The real Ann-Margret with ETA Carlo Martini.

While he was performing in Miami Beach, Florida, Carlo heard that Ann-Margret was appearing was right next door.  The real Ann-Margret!   So on his break, Carlo, dressed in his jumpsuit, ran next door to meet her.  Ann-Margret invited him backstage and told him he reminded her of someone she knew that was very dear to her heart.  She, of course, was speaking about Elvis.  Carlo had to get back to his own show, but he had just enough time to stop by a store and get the same gift for Ann-Margret that he had given Elvis—a friendship plaque.

Carlo has many more interesting stories to tell, just like those above; so he has written a book about his life. A brief outline follows:

Carlo Martini's love of music began in childhood. He had music in his mind and in his heart every moment as far back as he can remember.  When he was little, he liked to go to the movies and dream. The singers and actors became his idols. He set out on a path, not only to be a singer and actor himself, but also to personally meet as many of those idols as possible. This book is the story of his success in fulfilling his dream.

Grazie, Carlo!

Thank you, Carlo, for your interesting stories. And thank you, Debra, for the background information and photos you sent. I really enjoyed learning about Carlo’s history while editing this post. Best regards, Carolyn MacArthur, Editor, SIDEBURNS Magazine. (All photos used in this article were provided by Carlo Martini and Debra Poirier.)

Editor’s Notes:

*Robert Harold Loyd, a first cousin to Elvis Presley, was the stalwart gatekeeper at Graceland who co-authored the book “The Graceland Gates” about his experiences with the fans. Harold Loyd, as he was referred to in Carlo’s bio, was an employee at Graceland for 32 years, beginning in 1961. He died on January 21, 2002 of heart disease at the Methodist Healthcare-Central in Memphis at the age of 73.

*In 1967, Elvis Elvis bought a 163-acre ranch in Mississippi just across the Tennessee state line from Graceland. I could not find the name of the previous owner of “Circle G” in any of my research.

Introduction

In response to Kimberly Crane’s request, “I would love to see my favourite ETA in your magazine,” it is with much pleasure that I introduce ETA Ryan E. Williams to SIDEBURNS Magazine readers. Although I have met neither Ryan nor Kimberly in person, I received such wonderful messages from Kim, and a great bio outline from Ryan, I do feel I know them quite well. Theirs is a familiar story: one about a young ETA with a great big voice and an exciting stage presence, and a manager who spots the potential in the fine young artist and wants to help him fulfill his dreams. I enjoyed putting together this post for ETA Ryan E. Williams, but also for Kimberly Crane, his manager. Kimberly’s enthusiasm for her favourite ETA is infectious. Thank you both for your part in this post. We all wish you much success as you pursue your dreams. C.M.

Williams, a 20 years old Elvis tribute artist from the small town of Lincoln Illinois, became interested in Elvis at an early age when he saw his dad, Terry Williams, perform in his own Elvis shows. Terry Williams performed as an ETA from the mid-80s, and was one of Doc Franklin’s Elvises with Images of the King contests through the 1990s.  He was also one of the Las Vegas Elvises that performed and promoted Elvis.  He starred in the movie "Honeymoon in Vegas" in the 90s.  When Ryan was little, he stood at the stage and watched his dad perform.

Ryan’s love for Elvis continued to grow, and at the age of nine, he competed at a Graceland tent competition and won the youth contest in 2007.  As he was growing up, Ryan became more involved in the Elvis business with his dad, and soon began performing his own shows.  He went on to compete in 2016, when he was 17 years old, and placed in the semi-finals in Las Vegas and Memphis. Since then, he has competed in 10 competitions and placed or won in 8 out of the 10 times:

Ryan will be competing in the Blue Suede Memories Contest in the Pro Division.  As he pursues his career as an Elvis tribute artist, Ryan’s feels the greatest achievement in his ETA career would be to one day win the Ultimate Elvis Contest in Memphis.

Ryan loves being on stage and around fans.  “I love putting smiles on peoples’ faces and seeing them light up when they hear me sing and see me perform.  It brings back memories and happiness.”

Ryan’s next show will be at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Lincoln, IL on May 11th.

Kimberly Crane has been ETA Ryan E. Williams' manager for 3 years.  As evident in her enthusiastic comments, she is also his biggest fan and supporter: “He eats, sleeps, and breathes ELVIS!  I've had judges tell us when Ryan sings ”HURT”, they have never heard it done as well as Ryan does it.  It gives them goose bumps.  Everyone is saying he's a young Bill Cherry.  And by the way, that’s his REAL hair and sideburns!!!”

In mutual admiration, Ryan says of his manager, “She has believed in me since day one.  I was down on myself and about to give up singing, but she believed in me.  She helped me at the Logan County Fair, and talked me into performing in my costume for a talent contest, which I won in 2017.  Since then, we travel around quite a bit, performing at local nursing homes, bars and at many other events.  My manager, Kimberly, always says that I have a big voice, but an even bigger heart.  She loves that I am humble, and hopes that I stay grounded in such a tough industry.  She’s simply my biggest cheerleader.  Kimberly has nothing but high hopes for my career and wishes me nothing but success!”

In reply to Kimberly’s thank you note to a competition judge, she received the following reply (edited and paraphrased) regarding Ryan’s performance:

I felt his performance was VERY strong.  Everyone "thinks" they can do Elvis...but very few actually can. During each performance, I close my eyes for a few seconds - just to block out any visual effect, and Ryan's rendition of "Hurt" was one of the best I have ever heard.  There are a lot of vocal exercises going on in the song, and hitting the high notes at the end is where most performers falter...not Ryan.  I admit I got a bit of a chill when he hit - and held - the high note for a few seconds. Good luck in the future - I know Ryan will be successful!

Editor’s Note:  With permission from Ryan E. William via Kimberly Crane, I wrote the following addendum that contains information about former ETA Terry Williams that I would like to share with you:

Time has moved on since the early days when Ryan stood watching his dad on stage.  In a reversal of roles, Ryan’s dad, Terry Williams, who has onset Alzheimer’s disease and now lives in an assisted living home, loves to go and watch Ryan perform at his shows now.  Terry Williams still remembers the words to Elvis’s songs and from his wheelchair sings along with his son, Ryan.

We wish Ryan continued success in his ETA career, and send our appreciation and respect to Terry Williams for his years as an ETA. C.M.

I wish to thank Agnes Hay for sending ETA Patrick Johnson’s bio to be posted on SIDEBURNS Magazine.  In her writing, Agnes, an avid fan, has given us glimpses into the beginning of Patrick’s career as an Elvis Tribute Artist, and has outlined his many accomplishments—both as a performer and a competitor. Agnes has provided wonderful photos, including some lovely ones taken in Ireland.  I feel fortunate to have seen Patrick compete last year at the Niagara Falls Elvis Festival where he placed in the top 10, and I look forward to seeing him again this year.

Included in this post is a slideshow of stunning photos of Patrick performing at the NFEF in 2018 taken for SIDEBURNS Magazine by professional photographer Lori-Anne Crewe, of LA Crewe Photography. I have also added a video of Patrick in performance, followed by information about his exciting upcoming shows. C.M.

Intro

“How does a boy growing up in Ireland get interested in Elvis?”  Patrick Johnson was asked in an interview by a local television station.  “Well, we have television in Ireland too you know,” was his witty reply.

Patrick, one of nine siblings, grew up in Kilrush, a town in Co. Clare, Ireland.  His family owns a pub in Kilrush by the name of “Johnson’s Bar.”  Since Elvis himself had ancestors with roots in Ireland, perhaps that is where Patrick gets his humble and approachable nature.

Patrick’s Story

As a young boy, Patrick watched, and was fascinated by, Elvis Presley’s movies.  Elvis soon became his hero.  Elvis was a cool guy with a good voice, nice hair, great cars, and he always got the girls.

Beautiful Irish scenery.

Beautiful Irish scenery.

Patrick began mimicking Elvis’s singing and decided to try karaoke.  A couple of people told him he sounded like Elvis.  On one occasion, he went up on stage with the band and sang a couple Elvis songs.  As a result, someone asked him if he would perform at their grandmother’s birthday party.  Patrick took them up on their offer and they paid him.  He thought to himself,  “I’m onto something here!”

Before moving to the United States, Patrick spent a year working in Australia.  Once in the U.S., he made the decision to become an Elvis Tribute Artist.  After lots of practice and investing in a few jumpsuits and other Elvis accessories, Patrick solicited his singing ability and began appearing wherever he could to perform.

He has recreated the music and excitement of Elvis in concert venues, casinos, and participating in benefits and private events locally, and in several states and in Canada.

Patrick is co-producer of Memories of Elvis, a tribute to Elvis in a Vegas style performance.  He has collaborated with other ETAs, such as Matthew Boyce, Bill Cherry, Gordon Hendricks, Sylvain Leduc, and Dean Zeligman (Dean Z), to bring his show to venues throughout the U.S.

Aside from singing, his ability to interact with the audience through his humor, and engaging them to sing along at times, is one of his best attributes.  Although he is entertaining the crowd, he is also having fun himself.  He appears to be very comfortable on stage, and it shows in his performances.

Patrick represented New York, performing in the first Elvis festival in Ireland.

He has competed in the 1st Niagara Falls Elvis Festival in 2017, and again in 2018, placing in the top 10.

Patrick Johnson 4.jpg
Patrick Johnson 5.jpg
Patrick Johnson 6.jpg

Perhaps one of Patrick’s latest and greatest endeavors was that he was able to bring together four musicians with two backup singers known as “The Raised on Rock” band.  The band adds an enhanced level of energy to Patrick’s performances.  They have performed with him both locally, and in several cities throughout the US (i.e., NY City, Chicago, IL, Three Rivers, MI, Toledo, OH,  Pickstown, SD, Pitman, NJ, Morgantown; WV, Glasgow, KY,  Oakmont, PA).

Patrick’s latest adventure was traveling to Ireland in November 2018.  There he performed in concert with a band from Northern Ireland to benefit the West Clare Cancer Care Center to which $4,000 was raised.

Introduction

I wish to thank Matt Stone Sr for contacting me about his talented son, ETA Matt Stone Jr. At just 15, Matt successfully balances performing and volunteering with his responsibilities as a full-time high school student. Matt recently competed in the Lake George Elvis Festival, entertaining the judges and audience alike with his energetic performance and ease on stage as seen in the video that is posted following Matt’s bio.* It is my pleasure to introduce ETA Matt Stone to SIDEBURNS Magazine—a young man with a very bright future. C.M.

Matt Stone Jr is a young ETA from West Palm Beach, Florida.  The 15 year old Park Vista Community High School student is a guitarist in Park Vista's Jazz Band.  In addition to singing and playing the guitar, Matt also plays the drums and percussion instruments.  Musically inclined, Matt sees his future as a session musician or working behind the scenes in the music industry.

An ETA for just three years, Matt credits the start of his love for Elvis to John Stamos the “Full House” actor who, as character Uncle Jesse, not only expressed his love for Elvis on the show, but also impersonated the King in one favourite episode—jumpsuit and all.  Watching Uncle Jesse’s performance of “Jail House Rock” led to watching the Elvis movie of the same name, and from there he started singing songs and studying videos to adopt the Elvis persona he saw on the show. Matt likes the heart and soul of Elvis’s music, something he feels is lacking in today’s machine and auto tune music.  He feels like he's bringing good music to a new generation when he plays Elvis and other older music.

Matt comes from a musical family.  Matt’s dad, Matt Stone Sr, taught his son how to play the guitar and gave Matt his first guitar at age 4.  Matt’s has some vintage guitars once owned by his grandfather, who was also a guitar player.

Matt has a weekly gig at a local venue in West Palm Beach, but also volunteers to perform his Elvis tribute act at senior-living facilities two to three times per month.  He is seen by staff as an amazing, talented, and poised young man who does a really good job.  Matt’s other charity work includes a recent show for the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League.

Matt Stone Sr, who is a detective with the Palm Beach Sheriff’s office, is rightfully proud of his son.  "I couldn't be more proud because he's genuine; he's not arrogant and gets good grades, and knows right from wrong.  I couldn't ask for more.  I'm very blessed and want to help him on his journey. He has all the ambition," Matthew Stone said in the Sun Sentinel article, May 1st, 2018. Matt Sr also shared that not only does his son look and perform like Elvis Presley, he is an encyclopedia and historian (on the topic of Elvis).

Matt is indeed ambitious.  He tried out for "America's Got Talent" last January, and wants to try out for "American Idol" when he turns 16.  And to take part in the Elvis competition in Lake George, NY in June, 2018, Matt set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money for his trip to the festival.

Everyone one at SIDEBURNS wishes Matt very best wishes with future competitions and plans. Thank you for sharing your ETA story and great photos.

A discussion about Elvis wigs and keeping fit for performances led to some interesting information about today’s featured ETA, Ron Tutor Jr, from Tinley Park, Illinois, USA.  Ron, who has been cutting hair for 34 years and owns his own salon, Ron Tutor’s Salon Studios, in Orland Park, IL, cuts and styles his own Elvis wigs.

Ron started his ETA career a little later in life than some Elvis Tribute Artists, so to keep up with the younger ETAs, Ron works out regularly.  On their first date in 1982, Ron and his wife, Sharon, saw “First Blood” (the first Rambo movie) and it inspired Ron to lift weights, which he has been doing ever since.

Ron has done very well in competitions. In the video below at Images of the King, Memphis, TN, on August 14th, 2017, Ron is one of five in the Non-Pro finale. In a competition that started with twenty-five competitors, Ron had a fabulous finish.

In a recent show, Ron, his father, Ron Tutor Sr, and his 11 year old daughter, Jessa, all performed on one stage—three generations of ETAs!  Photos were provided Ron Tutor, with credit to Sharon Tutor.

ETA Ron Tutor Jr.

I started this wonderful Elvis journey about 6 years ago--a very late start, to say the least.  I was helping my 70 year old dad with his own Elvis Tribute show!   We decided to add a little variety to the show, and I, with no singing experience or background, along with my lovely and talented wife, sang a duet of “Devil in Disguise”.  I, of course, nervously stumbled through it, bad wig and all!  But I had fun, and thought maybe, just maybe, I could do this.  So, very unpolished and scared to death…lol, I entered a small contest at a local casino and won.  I was hooked!  But at 47 years old, if I really wanted to pursue this, I knew I would have to practice, learn, study, and listen.  And that’s what I did.

ETA Ron Tutor Jr.

ETA Ron Tutor Jr.

Along the way, I have been lucky enough to accomplish a few things:  2012 Hollywood Casino Elvis Contest, 1st place; 2013 Half Way to Windy City Contest, People’s Choice; 2014 Halfway to Windy City Contest, 3rd place; 2015 Annual Windy City ETA Competition, People’s Choice: 2017 Blue Suede Memories, 1st place Non-Pro; 2017 Images of the King, 5th place Non-Pro); 2018 Blue Suede Memories, 4th place Pro); 2018 My Way ETA Competition, 1st place.  But really, my biggest accomplishment is being so blessed in meeting some of the most wonderful people in the world, and making lifelong friends along the way--all because of my Elvis Tribute Artist journey.  And really, all because of Elvis!

ETA Ron Tutor Jr with his wife, Sharon Tutor.

My beautiful wife has been with me every step of the way encouraging and helping me.  And we plan on continuing this amazing journey together!  We have always told our little girl that she can be anything she wants to be, “Don't doubt yourself.”  And there I was 6 years ago, doubting myself, doubting my ability.  But here I am today, at 53, a part time Elvis Tribute Artist, and loving every moment of the experience!  I have a long way to go, but I don't plan on quitting anytime soon.  I will continue to practice, learn, study and listen to do the best I can to pay tribute to the greatest entertainer of all time, Elvis Presley!

When asked about his dad, Ron Jr had this to say:  My dad started late as well. He always had a nice Elvis sound.  Born in Mississippi, and in his 60s, he was asked to perform for at a beauty pageant.  He did great, and from there, he started doing a couple local shows a year. At 76, he is still at it! We are both performing together next week (August 16th, 2018) at Traversos Restaurant in Orland Park.  Here is a pic of my Dad dressed up as Elvis only a few years ago! How many guys get to perform at 53, an Elvis tribute with their 76 year old dad?!?  Feeling blessed!

Britain’s ETA Andy Reno has a very interesting and unique website.  In addition to information about his career as an ETA, Andy shares the story of Elvis's journey from his humble beginnings singing in church to his rise to super stardom.  Photographer Andrew Wood, of Andrew Wood Photography, has taken artistic snapshots of ETA Andy Reno dressed as Elvis, representing the important stages of Elvis’s life and music career, and Andy's own images as an ETA have been used to enhance the story.  In effect, ETA Andy Reno and photographer Andrew Wood have brought together the two worlds of Elvis Presley and ETAs in a very creative way.  Thank you very much, Andy.  Best regards C.M.

Bio

I have been a fan of Elvis Presley ever since watching “Jailhouse Rock” as a kid.  I was amazed by his looks, charisma and fantastic voice.
After winning a competition singing an Elvis song judged by the North West of England’s biggest radio station, Key 103, I decided to become a professional Elvis Tribute Artist in 2012.

In 2013 I entered the European Elvis Championships singing as GI Elvis and made the finals.  In 2014 I entered the competition again and made the finals with the recreation of the ‘68 Comeback Special performance.

Later in July 2014, I entered Europe’s Tribute to Elvis and was voted into the top sixteen by judges by Sam Thompson, Elvis's bodyguard, Charles Stone, Elvis's tour manager, Elvis's co-star Cynthia Pepper from the movie “Kissin’ Cousins”, and Suzie Quatro.

In 2015 I made the top ten in the finals of the European Elvis Championships as 70s Elvis.  I have been invited to tour with Elvis's favourite Gospel group the Blackwood Brothers, and I am now regarded as one of Europe’s best, and most versatile, Elvis tribute artists.

The Journey

Andy Reno#1.jpg

It was here that Elvis was first exposed to the rich Southern gospel that became a staple of his musical repertoire.  According to Assembly of God minister, Brother Frank Smith, Elvis was fascinated with music and the prospect of learning to play the guitar.  Brother Frank taught Elvis how to make D, A, and E chords…all he needed to play “Ole Shep”.  Elvis never realized his dream of becoming a member of the Statesmen or the Blackwood Brothers gospel quartets, yet throughout the rest of his life, Elvis recorded many of the beloved songs of his youth, the emotional and uplifting music of the church.

Andy Reno#2.jpg
Andy Reno#3.jpg

1953:  Elvis worked at Parker Machinists Shop right after graduation.  That summer he dropped by the Memphis Recording Service, home of the Sun label and made a demo acetate of “My Happiness” and “That’s When Your Heartaches Begin” for a cost of about $4.00.  (The studio came to be known as Sun Studio, though never officially named that until the 1980s.  For simplicity this text uses the name Sun Studio.)  The studio owner wasn’t in, so his assistant, Marion Keisker handled the session.  Elvis wanted to see what his voice would sound like on a record, as he had aspirations of becoming a professional singer. He took the acetate home, and reportedly gave it to his mother as a much-belated extra birthday present.

Andy Reno #4.jpg

January, 1954:  Elvis made another demo acetate at Sun.  Sam Phillips, the owner, is in this time; and, like Marion Keisker, was intrigued by this unusual looking and sounding young man.

Summer 1954:  At Marion Keisker’s suggestion, Sam Phillips called Elvis into the studio to try singing a song Sam hoped to put out on record.  The song was “Without You”, and Elvis did not sing it to Sam’s satisfaction.  Sam asked Elvis what he could sing, and Elvis ran through a number of popular tunes.  Sam was impressed enough to team Elvis up with local musicians Scotty Moore (guitar) and Bill Black (bass) to see if they, together, could come up with something worthwhile.  Nothing really clicked until July 5, when after a tedious session, Elvis and the guys broke into a sped-up version of Arthur ‘Big Boy’ Crudup’s “That’s All Right.”  This song, backed with Blue Moon of Kentucky became the first of five singles Elvis released on the Sun label.

Elvis Presley made 31 films as an actor.  He also made two documentary feature films, “Elvis - That’s The Way It Is” and “Elvis On Tour”.

After six months of basic training, including an emergency leave to see his beloved mother, Gladys, before she died in August 1958, Presley sailed to Europe on the USS General Randall.  For the next 18 months, he served in Company D, 32nd Tank Battalion, 3rd Armor Corps in Friedberg, Germany, where he attained the rank of sergeant for the rest of his service.

NBC Christmas Special, December 3rd, 1968:  He was thirty-three, a new dad, and unbeknownst to all, even himself, he was at the peak of his powers.
Two versions of the special were initially aired by NBC. The first included Presley singing "Blue Christmas" – the only seasonal song Binder agreed to use.  When the special was rebroadcast the following summer, this was replaced with a performance of "Tiger Man".

A deal was negotiated with Alex Shoofey of the International Hotel in Las Vegas. Presley would be paid $500,000 for four weeks of shows at the hotel, which was still under construction.
Before he could play to an audience, though, Presley would need a backing group.  He decided to forego familiar faces like Scotty Moore, D.J. Fontana and the Jordanaires, settling instead on a new lineup — later dubbed the TCB Band (short for “Taking Care of Business”) that featured lead guitarist James Burton, rhythm guitarist John Wilkinson, pianist Larry Muhoberac, bassist Jerry Scheff, drummer Ronnie Tutt, and a vocal gospel backing outfit named the Sweet Inspirations.  Presley released “Suspicious Minds” as a single later that fall, and it shot up the Billboard Hot 100 chart — becoming Elvis’s last No. 1 hit.  He would ultimately play more than 700 sell-out performances through 1976 at the International, by which by that time had become the Las Vegas Hilton.  In July 2014, the hotel traded hands again, and is now known as the Westgate. Jason was introduced to Elvis Presley at the young age of 3 while watching one of his mom’s favorite Elvis movies, “Viva Las Vegas”.  Jason had an instant connection to Elvis and became a lifelong fan from that moment on.  Jason comes from a family with a strong musical background, and is a third generation musician.  Jason's first instrument, at age 7, was the piano; at age fourteen he began his performance career following in his dad's footsteps as a professional working drummer.  After many years of performing in his hometown of Chicago, IL, as a professional drummer and keyboard player, Jason, always a huge Elvis fan, decided in 2013 to pay tribute to his idol Elvis Presley.  Jason made his debut in the ETA world in 2014 competing at Portage Indiana's Elvis Fest.

In early 2015, he entered The Windy City Elvis Competition where he had the chance to meet Elvis's best-man, road-manger and long-time friend, Mr. Joe Esposito.  After performing Elvis's classic song, "Hurt ", Mr. Esposito called Jason over and said he was very impressed with Jason’s performance.  Jason was asked to perform at Mr. Esposito's 77th birthday celebration which was held the very next day in Chicago.  In that same year, Jason also competed at The Epic Competition in Memphis during Elvis week.  In 2015, Jason was also asked to perform at the Legendary Clarion Hotel in Memphis during Elvis week, where Mr. Joe Esposito was also featured on the same day. Today, because of his very active schedule performing his tribute in his hometown of Chicago, IL, Jason does not compete in many competitions, but he always tries to stay in touch with all the ETA fans on social-media, and he shows his support to all the ETA friends he has made along the way.

Jason is a well-seasoned musician and performer and his love for Elvis shows in every performance. Jason is truly honored and humbled to be able to perform his tribute to Elvis fans in hopes that he can contribute to the Elvis tribute world by helping to keep the memory of Elvis Presley and his music alive and going strong for generations to come.

Introduction

It is a pleasure to introduce the UK’s multi-award winning ETA Garry J Foley to SIDEBURNS Magazine.  I wish to thank Garry for sending his bio and photos to post.  I have added great videos of Garry’s international performances and two from the 2017 Collingwood Elvis Festival that bespeak of Garry's professionalism and years of experience as an ETA.

In addition to Garry's own bio, the following edited excerpt from Graceland:  Home of Elvis Presley, August 2016, provides a little more information on Garry's background as an ETA:  Garry J. Foley’s love for Elvis’ music came from playing his father’s records at a very young age.  The very first record he ever purchased was Elvis’s “Don’t Be Cruel”, which remains a favorite to this day.  It was his love for Elvis' music that inspired him to become an Elvis tribute artist, leading him to perform all over the world.  Being an Elvis tribute artist is a dream come true for Garry, whose favorite Elvis song is “Suspicious Minds.”

Garry is making a return trip to Canada at the end of July, 2018 to compete for a second time in the Collingwood Elvis Festival.  Welcome back, Garry!  We wish you great success at the Festival.  Best regards, Carolyn MacArthur.

Introduction

It is such a pleasure to introduce Switzerland’s ETA Tommy King, aka Thomas Meyenberg, to SIDEBURNS Magazine followers.  I wish to thank Tommy for sending along his bio and photos to post.  In addition to two articles, one about a song competition Tommy entered, and the other, a promotional article from a booking agency that extols the many talents of ETA Tommy King, I have included three videos.  I have watched and enjoyed Tommy’s live podcasts from his car, where he comfortably responds to comments from his many fans in  German, Italian, and English.  As well as being a professional Elvis tribute artist, Tommy is a magician and an entrepreneur.  ETA Tommy King is, indeed, a multi-talented individual.

Bio

I was born in Switzerland very close to Zürich.  I have a sister and a brother, and neither is musically talented; but my brother, Andy Meyenberg, has been world champion in wakeboarding several times.

The first Elvis Song that I sang at school in 1976, when I was 6 years old, was “I Got Lucky”, and since then, I am a huge fan of Elvis and his music.

I'm have been an Elvis tribute artist since 1995 when my friends pushed and motivated me to buy a jumpsuit and dress up like Elvis, even though, at the time, I personally hated Elvis tribute artists :)

As a singer and performer, I try to be myself, since impersonating Elvis, in my humble opinion, is impossible because there was and is only one King - Elvis Presley!

Besides my jobs as an Elvis singer and tribute artist, and magician (
www.zauberer-rasmus.ch),  I’m an inventor of magic and sell my tricks all over the world.  Magic is my second passion and love.

I also produce a product to make huge soap bubbles (
www.riesenseifenblasen.ch) which are 100'% made in Switzerland.

Articles (Translated into English via translate.google.ca and Edited by C. MacArthur)

Article by Luzerner  Zeitung

EUROVISION:  As a musician who sings at many weddings, Tommy King wants to represent Switzerland in a song contest.  He is a passionate singer; but not only that, Thomas Meyenberg, aka Tommy King, greets us full of showmanship.  "I am the singer of this song, but the participation was not my idea."  A producer who was looking for a voice that sounds like Elvis had approached him.  At the end of September, they met for the first time, and now the rock'n'roll number, "Daddy's Sugar Girl", has been recorded professionally with the accompaniment of backup singers.  "I really like the song," says Meyenberg.  Hopefully others will also like the song as well, because the team behind the recording has been promoting it for Swiss representation at the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in Sweden, which will take place in May. Tommy already knows exactly what his appearance in Stockholm should look like: "Of course I will wear some glitter, and the backup singers will not be dressed too conservatively."  He can imagine that there will be two or more dancers - if his dream comes to fruition. Tommy King has to compete against 175 competitors for just one place in Stockholm.

Everything started in Unterägeri; however, the singer can draw on a wealth of experience which he always shares on stage, he says.  Already as a seven-year-old, Tommy had appearances where he sang songs by Elvis.  At age eleven, he appeared in front of 1,200 spectators in the tennis centre in Unterägeri.  Ten years later, he participated in the first Swiss championship in karaoke singing.  “In a competition of more than 600 participants, I was among the last 19.  I'm still proud of that today.”  Elvis Presley has always accompanied him.  Meyenberg has neither thought nor believed that he could make singing a profession.  It is probably due to his modesty that he is Switzerland's most famous Elvis impersonator today.  He does not, however, like to be called an “impersonator”.   "I see myself as an Elvis tribute artist and not as a copy."

In addition to his Elvis shows, Thomas Meyenberg is also in demand as a magician.  In this industry he is on the road as Rasmus.  "For a long time I was on the go as an artist," he says.  In 2010, he finally decided to put everything on one card:  "He who does not dare, does not win."   When it comes to work, Meyenberg is a perfectionist through and through.  For example, he did the fine tuning for the video for his ESC contribution.  "I was not satisfied with the first version, so I took care of it myself."  He still was not 100 percent convinced by the video.

The number of competitors in the song contest will be determined by the number of submissions.  The ten best interpreters of the Internet platform, as well as six Wels and three Ticino candidates, will present their song to a panel of experts.  In the live competition vocal quality, as well as stage presence, are evaluated. Six songs will be screened on February 13 in a live show on Swiss television after this round. The TV audience and a jury of experts each determine 50% of who should represent Switzerland at the ESC in Stockholm.  Getting into this live show is the real main goal.  "That would be really awesome," says Meyenberg.  The competition is very strong - and even comes with its own canton, for in addition to Meyenberg, former winner Marcellina will sing "Perfume of Love".  Tommy King has no illusions:  "At 45,  I am no longer such a dreamer, but rather a realist."

His velvety soft voice, his movements and poses guarantee you the real Elvis feeling.  Tommy’s atmospheric and likeable performance makes every event an unforgettable experience.

The unparalleled way Tommy King entertains audiences with his authentic Elvis voice, styling, moves and gestures of Elvis that are perfectly imitated.  Tommy King understands like no other, the audience from Anfang that was under his spell.  Tommy King's 30- to 90-minute Elvis shows make every event an unforgettable experience.  His repertoire includes more than 140 Elvis songs that he sings for his audience in "Tommy King LIVE".  The spectators are sympathetically and professionally involved in the Elvis show.  Since his earliest childhood, Tommy King has been passionate about the music of Elvis Presley.  As a 6-year-old boy, he sang his first Elvis songs.  At the age of 11, he was on stage for the first time.  The incomparable voice, the unforgettable songs, as well as the charisma and sympathy of Elvis, have influenced him since his earliest childhood.

Tommy King became the Swiss champion of Elvis tribute artists in 1997.  He is the only Swiss ETA to interpret the 50's, 60's and 70's Elvis.  Song requests are very often fulfilled spontaneously.  Tommy King not only interprets Elvis Presley, he also brings him life on stage and privately.  He is really proud to interpret our King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley.  With his Elvis shows, he lets the audience forget for a moment that Elvis Presley is no longer with us!But ELVIS PRESLEY lives on, in our hearts and in his music!

The first two videos are in English, but I included the third one, which is in German, because of the excellent visual content.

My interest in Elvis began when I watched the movie “Roustabout” on television around 1966.  I was very impressed.  I started listening to vinyl records and singing along.  At parties, I would play cassette tapes and sing along with Elvis to entertain people.  When karaoke came along, I sang on a regular basis.  Later I progressed to open mic with live music.  I tried to style my hair like Elvis and to imitate his look.  My biggest stumbling block was that I did not know the words.  More recently, I started doing songs in competitions, pubs, and legions.  This year will be my fourth time performing at Collingwood.  I strive to do better, and hope to improve.

Nick Policelli’s story was part of an article written by Paul Wilson for the Hamilton Spectator, August 15th, 2017 regarding Elvis’s passing 42 years earlier and about the Collingwood Elvis Festival in 2017.  The following was extracted from the article, paraphrased, and added as a complement to the above bio that Nick sent for me to post:

August 15, 2017

Nick Policelli lives in his neat bachelor apartment in downtown Hamilton. He would have loved to be in Graceland this year, but could not afford it.  He was in Collingwood though, on stage.  It was his third time.

Nick Policelli is a soft-spoken man.  "I've been shy all my life," he says.  “And so was Elvis."

Being shy has hurt him in the judging.  "On presentation, I got as low as 3.  Some say I was not loud enough.  I was too quiet.  I was nervous."

This year, he went to the festival as one of a dozen tribute artists who chose the "non-competitive" category.  Nick did not want to be judged.

"I just felt driven to be the best I could be."

For years he worked for the city of Etobicoke, as a gardener, then a custodian. Along the way, his marriage broke up.  He decided to change his life.  He had the bump taken out of his nose.  And he took care of that receding hairline with a toupee--jet black.

Buddies at work started to say, "Hey, Elvis."

Next thing you know, Policelli was singing "Heartbreak Hotel" at a retirement party, and karaoke, too.  And he would drive a cab in leather, singing Elvis.  Fares became fans.

He left his steady job, and got some small acting jobs.  But Elvis comes first.

ETA Nick Policelli.  Photo provided by N. Policelli.

ETA Nick Policelli.  Photo provided by N. Policelli.

This spring, he spent $475 that he could ill afford on a gold lamé jacket.  He wore it on the Collingwood centre stage before a sea of Elvis fans.  He was nervous, and afraid he would forget the words; so he set the lyrics at his feet.  It was his first time with a band backing him up.  He sailed through "All Shook Up”.  The crowd liked him.  Policelli would love to make this a career, but knows he has far to go.  And he is now 61.

"Maybe one day I'll have to give up."

Or maybe he'll be like Elvis, who never really left the building, not even after that steamy afternoon in August four decades ago.  Paul Wilson, Hamilton Spectator.

Introduction

The story of why and how Mark Shelton made the decision to become an ETA is one of the most touching that I have posted on SIDEBURNS Magazine.  Mark, who is from the State of Vermont, is an accomplished ETA with an interesting and extensive bio that I am pleased to share with SIDEBURNS readers.  Mark will be competing this coming weekend at the Niagara Falls Elvis Festival, Ontario, Canada.  I wish to thank Mark for sending along his bio and photos. Best regards, Carolyn MacArthur.

“Sing the music of Elvis like you did in high school.”

A man of great faith, Mark's motivation to prominently enter the Elvis Tribute Artist world, is led by a deep and powerful conviction.  Three days after they were wed, Mark’s bride, Lisa, was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer—a terminal sentence.  The couple have relied on their faith and trust in God to navigate this journey.

One day, upon this path, Mark asked Lisa what she would like to do in the time the Lord allowed them to share together.  Mark offered her vacations, but Lisa stated that she wanted to see Mark sing the music of Elvis like he did in high school.

Mark then began working to trim his weight down from over 385 to 215 pounds in about a year and put on the show of a lifetime.  The show was a sell out and requests began pouring in for Mark to perform his Elvis tributes in other venues.  All the proceeds from the concerts are donated to Lisa’s medical fund.

Mark Shelton, a dynamic performer with astounding vocal prowess, leaves audiences mesmerized in amazement with his incredible voice that is both strong and diverse.  Engaging--with his "star" quality, Mark Shelton effortlessly moves through the 1950s to the 1970s Elvis Presley songs, mirroring the King of Rock n' Roll.  He nails every Elvis Presley song of any era with such precision that people sometimes think they are listening to a recording and are left breathless when they discover it is a live performer who is singing.  It is truly impressive.

Consistently performing to sellout shows with his presentation of Elvis during “THE KING RETURNS” concert tours, Mark Shelton has become an internationally acclaimed Elvis Tribute Artist.  Mark Shelton and his highly impressive live band, leave audiences stunned in amazement at the world class quality of the production.  Mark's Elvis tribute concerts have a personal touch, since each benefit concert aids his wife in her ongoing battle with the dreaded disease.  Mark’s benefit shows have received national attention, and he has been featured on ABC News, CBS Inside Edition, Good Morning America, and many, many more.  Mark has also received global accolades, including featured stories in India, Fuji Television Network in Japan, and the Daily Mail in the United Kingdom.  Come and see why the world is talking about this not-to-be-missed show!

In the entertainment field, Mark Shelton has had an amazing career spanning multi-faceted venues, recording several times in Nashville, Tennessee, and releasing custom projects.  Mark has recorded and performed in Canada, on Cruise Ships, in hundreds of churches, schools, auditoriums, at festivals, on live television and radio, and at major music festivals including: Soulfest, the Block Island Music Festival, the M/S Mt. Washington Cruise Ship, the Florida State Fair, Godstock, Jesus is Lord Festival, the Lake Champlain Maritime Festival, Myrtle Beach Bike Week, Palm Beach, Key West, (etc., etc.), as well as in Montreal, Germany, and the Caribbean.

Mark also performed a special tribute to the music of the Rat Pack at the Hilton in Long Beach, California, for Project Cuddle.  Mark headed back to Los Angeles to perform once again at the Hilton in February of 2016 at an event hosted by very popular actor, John Stamos, this time doing the music of the “Flower Power’ era.  In 2011, Mark sang the National Anthem in front of a crowd of over 37,000 for the Boston Red Sox at Fenway. But it is his captivating tributes to the music, style and spirit of Elvis Presley for which Mark has received international acclaim as one of the best voices and renditions of Elvis hits ever heard.

Introduction

It is always a pleasure posting talented ETAs such as Josh Davis from Texas.  I want to thank Josh's wife, Jessica Davis, for sending along the wonderful photos, as well as her introduction, Josh’s background story, his bio, and concert listings.  I wish Josh continued success in his career as an award winning ETA.  Best regards, Carolyn MacArthur.

A Message from Jessica Davis

Josh is more than just another ETA, and his fans are more than just fans.  Josh always gives 100% in each and every show, and wants everyone in attendance to feel as if they are part of it. He is not just another guy getting up there in a jumpsuit singing some Elvis songs.  He always strives to bring a smile to each person and make them feel as if it is just for them.  If he knows their name he mentions them by name.  We are an Elvis family and he wants you to feel like you are in our family--not just a visitor.

Josh was introduced to Elvis as a very young boy by his dad.  His first experience was with the movie “Elvis on Tour”.  He had always been fascinated by music, but Elvis took it to a whole new level.  Josh was wowed by Elvis’s charisma and stage presence.  From that point on, Josh knew music was what he wanted to do.  He never felt like he fit into any certain puzzle piece, but Elvis changed that for him. Elvis brought the shy little boy out of his shell and gave him something to excel at and look forward to.

Introduction

I wish to thank Jamie Joslin for sending along the following introduction to ETA  Al Joslin’s bio.  Jamie also sent the recent video below that shows the professionalism her husband brings to each Elvis tribute performance:

Al does what he does as an Elvis Tribute Artist because he loves Elvis.  Even if he never sang or performed an Elvis song, he would watch and listen to Elvis constantly. He just happens to have an amazing Elvis voice and has learned to incorporate Elvis’s mannerisms and looks into his show to give his audience the complete Elvis experience.  He does his tribute to Elvis in an effort to represent Elvis in the best way possible.  Jamie Joslin.

Al Joslin is a multi award-winning Elvis Tribute Artist who has taken his show across the country for the past 12 years.  He is considered one of the top Elvis tribute artists in the business, having won first place at the 2016 Ultimate Orlando, and finishing in the top 5 in the world at the 2017 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest in Memphis.  He also won 2nd place at the 2017 Las Vegas Elvis Festival!  He recently won first place at the Elvis Fantasy Festival in Portage, IN.  This victory earned Al a spot to compete for the 3rd year in a row at the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest in Memphis.  Al loves performing every era of Elvis, and considers it the highest privilege to give tribute to the greatest entertainer of all time.

His inspiration came after visiting Graceland for the very first time when he was 17 years old.   Al started performing Elvis tribute shows shortly after graduating from Mississippi College, where he played wide receiver on the football team.  He puts the same energy and passion from his football playing days into performing his Elvis tribute show.  Al has been impacted by Elvis and his music in such a powerful way, and it is his number one goal to give a respectful and sincere tribute to his enduring legacy.

Al is married to his beautiful wife, Jamie, who is an attorney.  They reside in the Houston, TX area with their two daughters. On May 13, 2020, Al and Jamie Joslin celebrated their 3rd wedding anniversary. Everyone at SIDEBURNS Magazine wishes them many, many more years of wedded bliss.

I wish to thank ETA and recording artist, Vic De Sousa, from St. Albert, Alberta, for sending his bio and photos to be posted on SIDEBURNS Magazine, and to congratulate him on his successes in the Amateur Division at the Penticton Elvis Festival, British Columbia, in four years of competition.  Best regards, Carolyn MacArthur.

Let's just say that a young Vic De Sousa was mesmerized upon hearing that first musical note by the King.  We can thank Vic's mom for introducing him to her Elvis collection.  Vic quickly became intrigued with learning how to sing and portray the one and only Elvis Presley at a young age.  He slicked back his hair, and quickly persuaded his parents to purchase a guitar for him so that he could sing and perform like Elvis.  Vic is also an independent recording artist that fronts his own rock band called Stereo Villain (formerly De Sousa Drive).  Stereo Villain's debut ep (extended play) CD was released July 2015.

To date, Vic has released two ep CDs under De Sousa Drive, and one full length CD and ep under the name Sweet Alibi.  Vic was born to entertain and feels very privileged to help keep the memory of The King of Rock and Roll alive in front of audiences everywhere.  Vic has been a regular performer at Busby, Alberta, Blue Suede Music Festival (put on by TCB Rock and Roll Legends) since 2009.  He performed in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with fellow ETA, and friend, Rob Knight, early in 2015.  He filled in for his friend, Adam Fitzpatrick, on the Louisiana Hayrides in 2013, and just signed on for their 2018 spring tour.  He placed in the top 5, and 3rd, in 2016, and placed 2nd for his division in 4 years of competition in the Penticton Elvis Festival.  Whether he Is performing Elvis's music, or his own, the man who started rock and roll lives on at each and every one of Vic's performances.  Elvis is in his heart and that of the audience.

Introduction

The good-looking young man in the photo is ETA Travis Hudson from San Antonio, Texas, who sent along his interesting bio and photos to be posted in Focus On.  The opening paragraph of Travis's bio, which relates the story of his early Elvis experiences, is a delight to read. Travis included a great photo of when he was 14, dressed as Elvis, to accompany his story.

Travis’s photo from his youth reminds me of ETA Sylvain Leduc’s similar photo he shared of himself dressed in a homemade jumpsuit that he hand-decorated in his teens.  Different places, different times, but parallel stories of young teens wanting to express their admiration for Elvis Presley in their own unique ways, and both growing up to be successful ETAs.  I am always pleased when ETAs send personal photos to be included in their post as they add such wonderful visual appeal to their story.  Travis also sent some great performance photos and some still shots to add to his post.  As well as having a closet full of Elvis jumpsuits and costumes, Travis, a dedicated Elvis fan, has an extensive collection of Elvis memorabilia which I was privileged to see in photos.  It is such a pleasure introducing ETA Travis Hudson to SIDEBURNS Magazine readers--an ETA who puts so much heart into his tribute.  Best regards, Carolyn.

Travis Hudson is originally from Guatemala.  He resides in San Antonio, TX.  He is always asked if he is from San Antonio, and his response is, “No, but I got here as soon as I could.”  Travis’s first language is Spanish, but since he has been in Texas most of his life, he now speaks Tex-Mex.  Travis has been married to his beautiful wife, Natalie Hudson, for almost 8 years, and they have a son, Nathan, who will be turning 3.  Travis’s wife, who is a cosmetologist in San Antonio, taught Travis to do his hair and makeup.  At the age of 14 Travis saw a man on TV and asked his mom who he was.  His mom said, “That’s Elvis.”  Travis’s response was, “Wow he has some really nice hair.  Can you make me a jumpsuit?”  His mom looked at him with an “are you nuts” expression, but she agreed to make him a jumpsuit.

They both went to Hobby Lobby, and together they made a costume—from the jumpsuit and cape, right down to the shoes.  Once the jumpsuit was done, Travis wore it to school for no apparent reason.  The teachers and students started coming out of their classes to get their pictures taken.  Travis didn’t sing Elvis songs at the time, nor he did he own one song of Elvis.  A teacher approached Travis and asked him if he would like to sing for the debate competition that was coming up on the weekend.  Travis then had to ask his dad to buy him a karaoke machine and to go to a music store and buy an Elvis karaoke track. Travis thought he would be singing in front of 20 people or so.  It turned out to be over 400 people that he sang in front of on a stage.  The first two songs that he sang were “Teddy Bear” and “All Shook Up”.  Little did Travis know that this would pave his way into the ETA world.

Travis, who is now 34 years old, is first and foremost a huge Elvis fan.  He started his ETA career a little over three years ago.  He has been collecting and receiving items, and has a room in his house dedicated solely to his Elvis collections.

Travis sings mainly all over Texas, but has travelled to other states.  Travis entered his first Elvis competition in Dallas, TX, in 2017 and made it to the semi-finals.  Travis has performed for some big companies, such as Google, Rack Space, DR Horton, and State Farm, to name a few.  He has done some local Elvis contests where he placed 1st and 3rd.  Travis sings for many private events.  If you want to catch Travis in concert, he performs every year at Chuys Mexican Restaurant in San Antonio for Elvis’s birthday.  Travis will also be in Houston, TX, on March 24th, for a public show at the Blue Wolfs Bar and Grill.  He also has another big show at the Glade Water Opry in Glade Water, TX, on May 18th.  Travis enjoys performing in someone’s backyard, as well as the ‘big stage’.  He believes that every ETA has something special to bring to the stage that makes their tribute unique.  He feels that although we all come from different backgrounds and ethnicities, in the end we are paying tribute to the one and only Elvis Presley.  Travis believes that we all have a little Elvis in us.

Introduction

I am pleased to introduce ETA Mark Lee Pringle to SIDEBURNS followers.  As an ETA, Mark sets himself apart from other ETAs by focusing exclusively on Elvis Presley in the early years of his career.  Mark's passion for Elvis in the 1950s goes beyond performing his songs.  At the end of his bio and photos I have provided additional information about Mark and his amazing collection and creations.

"1950s Historical ETA" Mark Lee Pringle

I'm from Girard, Ohio, and I've been an Elvis fan since the age of 3!!  I've always loved his music and movies from all eras...but the time-period that really 'got me’ was the 1950s!

I played drums in a few country & western bands several years ago, and when it was time to do a fast dance tune, I got the honors.  LOL.  I would usually sing “Blue Suede Shoes”, “Hound Dog”, or “Whole Lot of Shakin”.  Well, people kept coming up to me after the shows and saying to me, ''Hey, you should imitate Elvis; you sure sound like him.''

Well, I didn't give it much thought at first, because the fellas that were paying tribute to him back then were all 1970s era--gold sunglasses and white jumpsuits, and I couldn't see myself doing that portrayal.

I kicked the idea around a few months and thought, "I'll do 1950s Elvis!” (Not many people were doing the 50s back then, 17 years ago).  So I started studying and researching everything I could get my hands on from his 50s career!!

I was/am determined to have the most detailed, historic portrayal, in both sound and visual!!  Now I have the most historically detailed and correct outfits, guitars, microphones, and complete band-gear of any other ETA in the World! [Fact]

When I perform with my live band, we do the same song sets, in order, like Elvis did from 1954 to 1957, and I tell trivia and historic facts about the songs and time period.

This is just my 'take’ on it.  (Everyone approaches their tribute their own way).  I don't sell CDs, photos, DVDs, or T-shirts of 'me'. I keep my tribute to Elvis 'just that'!  I tell my audiences, ''If you happen to like what you see and hear that I do, then go out and buy an Elvis CD/DVD/book or T-shirt!''

I used to compete when I first started, for the first 6 years, and came in 1st and 2nd place in many different contests from Cleveland to Memphis; but now I just focus on keeping my tribute as detailed as possible.

My wife, Brenda Pringle, plays piano and guitar, my son Scot Pringle plays drums, and my good friend, Bill Lewis, plays stand-up bass in our band.

I have a blast doing what I do, and it's an honor to pay tribute to Mr. Presley.  I have been very blessed!

Thank you, friends!  Mark Lee Pringle

1950's Elvis Era Replicas and Gear

A Follow-Up and Thank You

I wish to thank ETA Mark Lee Pringle for sending along his bio and photos to post on SIDEBURNS Magazine.  Mark has such an interesting Facebook page.  Mark, a collector of 1950s Elvis memorabilia,  makes most of his own 1950s Elvis costumes which he shares in photos on his Facebook page.  Mark recently made a jacket like the one DIG Magazine gave Elvis in 1956 at his first Las Vegas appearance by reconstructing a beige jacket and hand drawing the DIG logo on the back of the jacket with permanent fabric markers.  Mark's 1955 belted jacket, like the one Elvis wore at Ellis Auditorium, was crafted from three other jackets.  Mark exhibits great artistic talent in the  costumes he makes, and his knowledge of all things early Elvis is remarkable.*  When I asked Mark about his costumes and collection, his response was, “I make/craft about 80% of my outfits.  I try my best to make them as historically correct to what Elvis actually wore from 1954 to 1958.  I collect only 1950’s items…either outfits, guitars, or items like he had at Audubon Drive or SUN Studio (Memphis Recording Service).  Pics of all of these items are also on my Replicas and Gear page."

*Mark shares very interesting background stories that explain the costumes in the photos.  Mark also recently posted some delightful photos and videos that celebrate Chinese New Year.  Mark Lee Pringle--an ETA with many interests and talents!  Cheers, Mark! Carolyn.

Update: June 10, 2020

Since Mark first appeared in Focus ON in 2018, he has given up his Elvis tribute and is selling all his works of art.  We at SIDEBURNS Magazine wish Mark good health and much happiness in the years to come. Thank you, Mark, for such an interesting and inspiring post. Best regards, Carolyn MacArthur.

Today, Oct. 26th. 1957, ''Jailhouse Rock'' went to number 1 on the charts!!! The movie is released on Nov. 8th, 1957. My replica hand-crafted outfits that I made portray the iconic jail outfit and the ''Beast in Me'' jacket from those scenes in the movie. For the 'jail' outfit, I bought a black jean-jacket and pants, then hand-drew all of the stitches and numbers with white 'puffy-paint'. I then took a referee's shirt and cut the stripe-panels and applied them to a black dress-shirt. I also bought a pair of black All-Star Converse sneakers and blackened the toes just like Elvis wore for the actual movie scene. ( He wore black loafers for the promo photos.) For the ''Beast in Me'' jacket, I found a similar grey sport-coat and hand-drew all of the black-stripes with a permanent magic-marker.

A Few Words from Mark

I portrayed 1950's Elvis in my tribute show for a total of 17yrs. I was lucky enough to perform with Ronnie McDowell and his band which included the late great Scotty Moore, D.J.Fontana, Gordon Stoker, Millie Kirkham, and the rest of the touring gang that year.  I performed in Memphis for twelve of those years at B.B.King's, Hard Rock, Jerry Lee Lewis's Cafe, and the Peabody Hotel, as well as the old Graceland complex. Our show band, I'm proud to say had the most detailed gear and outfits in replica of 1954 to 1957.  You can still check out my photos on my replica's page.

I had a full career and loved every minute of it. I just retired a few years ago to get back to my Chinese kung fu school in Girard, Ohio, teaching full-time again.

Thanks so much again for the support of all of the real Elvis fans and to Carolyn for promoting the ETA world!!   God Bless, Mark Lee Pringle.
